The Maternity steam has managed to secure a grant from Thunderbirds to be able to fund a part time project manager from the Maternity Stream of Sanctuary for one day a week for forty weeks. We are looking for someone with passion and enthusiasm to promote and support applications for the Maternity Service of Sanctuary Award. To achieve this award services will need to demonstrate genuine commitment to the core sanctuary values set by the City of Sanctuary Movement.

The core values can be summarized as follows:

1. Learn about what it means to be seeking sanctuary; and be actively involved in awareness raising.

2. Embed – take positive action to make welcome and inclusion part of the values of your organisation or community, to support sanctuary seekers and refugees, and to include them in your activities.

3. Share your vision and achievements; let others know about the positive contribution refugees make to our society and the benefits of a welcoming culture to everyone.

At the end of last year and the beginning of this, the Maternity Stream of Sanctuary will complete filming of two DVD’s which will be valuable resources for the Maternity Service of Sanctuary Award. One DVD is for asylum seeking and refugee women and is about how and why women should access maternity services in the UK and the second is for health professionals and focuses on the needs and experiences of asylum seekers and refugees.

The Maternity Stream of Sanctuary has been through a long ‘pregnancy’ and with this new post and new resources we are looking forward to a very positive ‘birth experience’. Would you like to be at the birth?? It may be hard work but the rewards are priceless and will bring great joy!
